Mrs. Kate Becvar
Personal Profile
I have been married to my husband Dan for five years. We just had our first child (Jonathon Michael) in April of 2009. We also have a puppy named Allie. We attend and serve at a church called the Edge, which currently is located in Lombard but will soon be moving to Aurora. I am the event coordinator for HER (the women's ministry at the Edge) and I'm a part of a married couple's small group. I enjoy our family walks with the baby and the puppy and baking yummy things. I grew up in Massachusetts where my family and a couple of siblings still reside. My favorite part about the east coast is sitting on the rocky coast and listening to the waves crash on the shore. I began to take an interest in Spanish in 7th grade when I took my first Spanish class in junior high school. In high school I was able to go on a few youth missions trips to Spanish speaking countries and God used those trips to grow in me a passion for the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking people. I have served in Bolivia once and in Mexico four times.
Professional Profile
I graduated from Gordon College (in Massachusetts) with a major in Spanish and a minor in secondary education in 2003. During my junior year there I studied abroad for a semester in the Dominican Republic. I received my Masters of Education in Curriculum & Instruction from Northern Illinois University in 2007. In October of 2007, I presented at the annual conference for the Illinois Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages. I have been working to complete my Masters of Education in School Improvement & Leadership through Olivet Nazarene University, though I have put a hold on that plan since the birth of my son. I taught my first year at a public high school in Massachusetts and I have taught the last five years at Plainfield South High School. In addition to teaching part time this year at Timothy Christian, I teach as an adjunct instructor at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove.
Philosophical Profile
I believe that God made me in His image and I also believe that God created each of my students in His image. God has created each one for a special purpose and has given each individual special abilities and gifts. I believe that each student (whether in public or Christian school) has been placed in my class intentionally by God. As their teacher I have the responsibility to teach them academic content and equip them for their futures while at the same time loving them as Christ loves them and challenging them to grow in their own faith. I love teaching Spanish because I get to engage and excite my students every day in my classroom to learn a new language through fun, interactive and effective methods. It excites me even more to see and hear of students' opportunities to use their Spanish in the grocery store or on missions trips
