Mr. Jim Hartgerink

Personal Profile

I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago, attended Timothy Christian High School for four years, and graduated in 1970.  Back then we were lucky if we had art class once a week.  My father worked as a graphic designer in Chicago and that is how I first became interested in art.

Barb and I have three children.  Our oldest daughter is an English teacher at a small Christian high school in southern California.  Our son and his wife are both graphic designers in the Elmhurst area and our youngest daughter lives in the mountains of Colorado with her husband.

Professional Profile

I attended Calvin College, were I met my lovely wife Barb.  I graduated in 1974 with a B.A.. in art education and began teaching at Timothy in 1976.  I have been the yearbook advisor since 1980.  Several years ago the yearbook staff made the transition to digital photography and digital layout.  I still enjoy photographing “students in action” and working with the yearbook staff in producing a quality yearbook each year.

I studied for my masters degree at Northern Illinois University and received an M.A. in art in the early 80’s.

Philosophical Profile

The visual arts can be used to serve others and to respond to our gracious and loving creator as an act of worship. I believe that all students should be able to express their ideas visually and that we should assist them in improving their visual communication skills.
