Mock Trial Team Wins Regionals, Heads to State Competition

On Friday, February 19, the Timothy Christian Mock Trial team entered the DuPage County Regional knowing that they would have to finish in the top two teams to be certain of advancing to the state championship in Springfield. They also knew that Hinsdale Central would be in the regional. Hinsdale is the defending state champion that finished fourth in the nationals last year and most of their team was returning. Timothy played Glenbard South and Wheaton Academy in the first two rounds, both strong teams.

After counting the scores, the two highest scoring teams were Hinsdale Central and Timothy Christian. Both teams would now advance to Springfield but a Regional Champ was still to be determined. . After a tremendous trial, it was announced that the teams had tied. The presiding judge, an actual judge in DuPage County, was asked to break the tie. After a short deliberation, it was announced that Hinsdale (the plaintiff in the case) had won the competition. The Timothy team graciously applauded and started to congratulate their opponents. But the announcer had made a mistake, and she quickly made the correction and said the defense had won, meaning Timothy, not Hinsdale, was regional champs.

The team will head to the Mock Trial State finals in Springfield on Saturday, March 13.

The Mock Trial team members include: Jasmine Stein, Olivia Doig, Ben Wagner, Peter Matthews, Kate Ardinger, Abby Canfield, Meghan McCloud, Taylor Hoogendoorn, Anna Wondergem, and Danny Huizinga. The Timothy B team, comprised of six freshmen, competed and finished 8th place out of 14 teams. That team is Clarke Doig, Bonnie Van Dyk, Jordan Fleming, Lexi Banks, Alexandra Orel, and Amanda Hays.  They are coached by Mr. Scott Roelofs, Mrs. Cathy McNeil Stein and Mrs. Kirsten Hauser.
