Softball Team Splits a Doubleheader with Ridgewood

May 5 & May 8, 2010

It took three games, but the Timothy girls’ softball team finally figured out the Ridgewood Rebels.  On a weekday game last Wednesday (May 5th) Timothy travelled to Ridgewood for the first game in the series.  After several errors, weak hitting and a scary injury (fortunately that Timothy player is fine and back on the fieldJ), our Trojans went home bruised and defeated, losing 14 to 4.

Saturday, May 8th was a very cold, cloudy and windy day for a doubleheader, but the rains stayed away.  Timothy played much better in the first game, but left too many players on base.  In the end, the Trojans put 13 players on base, but only 2 made it home.  Timothy lost 7 to 2.  Janna Strodtman led Timothy going 3 for 4 with a triple.  Hope Zigterman and Marisa Voss added two hits each.

The second game was much better for Timothy.  The hits came at the right times, the defense played without an error and the pitching was on the mark.  When those three things come together you’re going to win most games, as the girls did, by a final score of 10 to 0!  Timothy pounded 11 hits, including three by Audie Smith, two by Christina Lemon (including a triple) and three by Hope Zigterman.  Marisa Voss pitched a great game getting the win in her first varsity start.

Varsity plays at Illiana on Monday (May 10), and hosts Chicago Christian on Tuesday.

Varsity Soccer Has 3rd Consecutive Shut-Out

4/26/10

The Lady Trojans had been anticipating a competitive match against the Lady Broncos from Fenton who were ranked first in the MSC conference.  Michelle Ditchfield found the back of the net early in the 6th minute to give the Lady Trojans a 1-0 lead.  There were opportunities for both teams throughout the first half, but the score would remain 1-0 as the teams headed in for the half.  During the second half the Lady Trojans locked down defensively and continued to send pressure into the attack to maintain the lead. Niki Pizzello would make a goal line save to keep the shut out. Keeper Aimee Vos and captain Rita Clousing led the Trojans to their third consecutive conference shut out. The Lady Trojan's bench was key tonight providing a tremendous boost in a tight game.  TC has improved their conference record to 5-3 and are overall 5-7-1. On Saturday the Lady Trojans will host cross-town rival Montini High at 12:15p.

Ladies' Varsity Soccer Takes Two

4/26/10 - vs. Riverside Brookfield - W-1-0
Another beautiful night for a soccer match at TC! The Lady Trojans hosted the Lady Bulldogs in their second conference match of the season. Both teams came out strong looking to strike first. Ana DeJong would make a huge goal line stand to deny the Bulldogs an early first half goal. Despite efforts on both sides the score would remain 0-0 at half.

The intensity grew in the second half as both teams felt the pressure to score first. With 19 minutes left in the match freshman Daniela Girotti would score first to give the Lady Trojans a 1-0 lead. Commandingly the Lady Trojans would out-shoot the Bulldogs 9-2 in the second half. Securing her second shut out for the season Aimee Vos was supported by the strong defensive play of both Mary Meigs and Rita Clousing. The Lady Trojans were also supported by exceptional play from Kyla Smits and Colleen Griffin.

Currently the Lady Trojans are 4-7-1 and 4-3 in the MSC.  On Thursday 4/29 the Lady Trojans play Fenton at Redmond Park at 6:15p.  Thanks to all for your support!

4/23/10 - vs. Elmwood Park Match - W -2-0
Friday night the Lady Trojans took the field eager for the rematch against conference opponent Elmwood Park. In the 8th minute of play the Michelle Ditchfield connected with Cassidy Block to open up a 1-0 lead. The play was confined to the midfield for much of the half, each team only shooting 4 times. The Lady Trojans would hold 1-0 lead heading into half time.

Looking to out-tackle Elmwood Park, TC aggressively began the second half. 10 minutes into the second half the Michelle Ditchfield would score on a left footed shot from 20 yards out assisted by Jasmine Stein. The Lady Trojans were led by the exceptional play of Audrey Dalhuisen and the Clousing sisters--Rita and Rose. Aimee Vos convincingly held on to her first shut of the season.

Timothy Softball Gets First Conference Win

4/24/10

Saturday, April 24th marks the first softball win for Timothy in the Metro Suburban Conference.  The day started poorly for two reasons.  First, the overnight rains left Timothy’s home field unplayable causing us to shift our double-header to Elmwood Park’s field.  So much for home field advantage.  Second, the Timothy girls came out in the first game and played the absolute worst defense you could imagine.  This led to a 15 – 0 miserable defeat.  There is nothing positive to report from that game, so let’s move on to game 2.

In game 2, the actual Timothy team showed up ready to play, leading to a 3 – 2 victory!  After quickly shutting down Elmwood Park in the top of the first inning, Timothy turned two walks into their first run of the day.  Audie Smith’s aggressive lead-off at second base drew the throw of the Elmwood Park catcher – this allowed Kari LeGrand to steal home.  Elmwood Park loaded the bases in the second, but Janna Strodtman’s great pitching struck out their leading hitter to end the inning.  Janna kept the Elmwood Park batters completely off-balance throughout the game, leading to many ground ball outs.

Both Timothy and Elmwood Park scored a run in the third, so Timothy held a 2 – 1 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th inning.  Timothy sophomore Mackenzie Schaeffer was extremely focused on getting a hit – which she did by ripping a double to center field.  Later in the inning, the girls manufactured an insurance run with a double steal.  After Kacey Wieringa broke for second base drawing the catchers throw, Schaeffer ran home from third just in time to beat the throw back.  Things got a little shaky in the top of the 7th, but shortstop Kari LeGrand ran easily 60’ to catch a fly ball in foul ground.  Then Christina Lemon grabbed another (one of five!) ground ball at third base and a perfect throw to first secured the win.

The Timothy varsity girls will play their next game Monday at home against Fenton.

Girls Soccer vs. Elmwood Park

4/21/10

There is light at the end of the tunnel.  After having seven starters sit out last week, six of the Lady Trojan players returned to the lineup last night against Elmwood Park High School.  It was another beautiful night for a soccer match.  Elmwood struck first on a free kick just outside the box in the 21st minute to make it 1-0.  The first half looked as if it would end that way until a quick Elmwood Park counter attack made it 2-0.

Aimee Vos came up with some big saves in the second half to hold Elmwood to just one more goal.  Kyla Smits connected with Michelle Ditchfield on a through ball to make it a 3-1 match with 15 minutes left.  Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time on the clock for the Lady Trojans surge of momentum.  Despite the loss, the girls are playing with resiliency.  TC was supported with exceptional play from the bench by Katie Rhebergen, Anna Wondergem, Rose Clousing, and Caitlin Nelson.

Thanks to all the fans who came out to support us! We are grateful for all you do. The Lady Trojans play Trinity at Triton College Wednesday 4/22 at 4:30p.

Varsity Softball Drops Two at Riverside – Brookfield

4/17/10

After a very close loss at home to Riverside – Brookfield on Wednesday, the R-B squad came out on Saturday (April 17) morning ready to show Timothy how they have earned their 12 and 1 record.  R – B put runs on the board in every inning with great hitting throughout the line-up.  Timothy earned their lone run in the fourth inning.  Kacey Wieringa walked and stole second.  She then scored on a hard-hit double by Mackenzie Schaeffer.  Unfortunately we couldn’t get the bats going and lost the first game 12 to 1.

The Lady Trojans loosened up right away in the second game and had the bats working.  Kacey Wieringa and Janna Strodtman both singled in the first inning, allowing Christina Lemon to hit a three-run blast to right field.  We allowed R – B to come back and tie the game, and even though Timothy got the first batter on base in both the 2nd and 4th innings, couldn’t produce any runs.  Unfortunately in the bottom of the 4th, R – B hitters got things going and strung together several strong hits.  This led to 7 runs in that inning and a 10 to 3 lead for R – B.  Our Timothy girls didn’t give up and came right back to score 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning, but we just couldn’t catch up, eventually losing 15 to 8.  In that second game, our Timothy girls had 12 hits and scored more runs against R – B than they have allowed all season.

Girls Soccer vs. Hinckley-Big Rock

4/15/10

The Lady Trojans took the field Thursday optimistic that in spite of missing three starters, they were still a team to compete with.  Unfortunately, loosing three more key players in the match posed problems for the Lady Trojans. Hinckley-Big Rock took advantage by scoring three quick goals in 8 minutes to open a convincing lead. Michelle Ditchfield found the back of the net on a long shot to make it 3-1 going into the half.

Hinckley-Big Rock's speed was tough to handle and they managed to score two more goals to make it 5-1. The Lady Trojans played with pride and passion against a good team. Despite the bumps and bruises, they kept composure. Way to go Lady Trojans!

The Lady Trojans play this Saturday at 12:15p against Nequa Valley (JV) and will focus on getting healthy for next week.

JV Baseball Drops a Tough Against Wheaton Academy

4/15/10

The Timothy Christian JV Baseball team dropped a tough contest to a strong Wheaton Academy team by a score of 18-7.  Offensively, the Trojans were led by Ethan Bardolph and Jimmy Huisman with two hits each.  Philip Stanton, Alex Zarek, Matt Biscan, and Sam Meyer all contributed a hit each but were no match for a Wheaton offense that scattered 19 hits over 6 innings to take the win.  Bardolph scored two runs while Stanton and Ben Zastrow each swiped two bases in a losing effort.

Timothy Varsity Softball loses conference opener

4/14/10

Timothy played our first conference game Wednesday against Riverside Brookfield.  We played a solid game, but just couldn’t string our hits together and lost 6 to 1.  After giving up 4 runs in the first two innings, Timothy held R-B scoreless for the next four.  In the bottom of the sixth inning Timothy scored one run and nearly had more, but a great stop and throw by the R-B shortstop ended the Timothy rally.  R-B added 2 more runs in the top of the 7th inning.

Timothy was led by sr. catcher Audie Smith who was 2 for 3 with a double, stolen base and a pick-off of an attempted steal of 2nd base.  Five Timothy batters had one or more hits in the game.

Girls Soccer vs. Illiana

4/13/10

Tonight the Lady Trojans lost their second conference match to conference rival Illiana Christian High. Despite solid defending by Mary Meigs, Rita Clousing, and Audrey Dalhuisen, the Vikings managed to find the back of the net at the 22nd minute in the first half on a corner kick.  Illiana would score again with 10 minutes left in the second. TC had several chances, unfortunately the ball did not bounce our way. Final score: 0-2

The Lady Trojans were missing Lauren Couture tonight and are still managing several other injuries. Please keep us in your prayers as we try to get healthy. Thursday the Lady Trojans travel to Hinkley Big Rock to play a non-conference match.

Girls Soccer Enjoys Beautiful Weather and Tie Score against IMSA

4/10/10

It was a great day for soccer as the Lady Trojans got set to play their first non-conference match against IMSA on Saturday afternoon. The first 30 minutes were scoreless as play was contained in the midfield zone.  IMSA struck first at the 7 minute mark and then again in the last minute of the first half to create a 2-0 deficit for the Lady Trojans.

The second half began and TC looked determine to make up ground. In the 24th minute Niki Pizzello scored a header off a great corner kick by Kyla Smits. Two minutes later the Lady Trojans tied the game as Jasmine Stein finished a long ball sent in by Michelle Ditchfield. The Lady Trojans would go on to tie IMSA 3-3.

Tuesday night TC plays a conference match against Illiana Christian High School. Kick off is scheduled for 6:15p. TC is 2-1-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Girls Soccer Fall Short in Home Opener

4/8/10

The Lady Trojans came up short in the home opener against Fenton High School losing 2-1. Jasmine Stein scored the first goal for the Lady Trojans, assisted by Michelle Ditchfield..  Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for the win as a determined Fenton squad scored on a quick restart to even the match in the second half.  Later Fenton would go on to win it by scoring another quick goal in the second half of overtime. The Lady Trojans were led by the exceptional goal keeping of Aimee Vos who made 15 saves for the night.

The Lady Trojans are 2-1 in the MSC and play IMSA at 2pm on Saturday at home.  We thank all the fans who came out to support us despite the cold weather, we hope to see you back on Saturday.

Girls' Soccer Battles and Beat the Brookfield Bulldogs

The Lady Trojans played their second conference match against the Riverside Brookfield Bulldogs.  After an early goal by the Bulldogs, the Lady Trojans locked down defensively and managed to find the back of the net off a great strike from Jasmine Stein assisted by Michelle Ditchfield.

The second half was a battle. Both teams played strong, tough soccer. Led by the exceptional play of Rita Clousing and Aimee Vos, the Lady Trojans clamped down defensively and only allowed 4 shots on goal during the second half. With 8 minutes left on the clock, Niki Pizzello scored the game winner off a through ball from Michelle Ditchfield.

The Lady Trojans are 2-0 in the MSC and have an overall record of 2-0. They kick off the home opener on Thursday night at 6:15p against conference opponent Fenton High School. We hope to see you there!

A Beautiful Day for Two TC Softball Victories

3/23/10

The softball season opened with sunshine and home / away games against cross-town rival IC.  The JV team had the defense clicking and controlled the game behind strong pitching from Marisa Vos.  After allowing a hit from the first IC batter, Marisa and the strong defense behind her shut down the IC bats.  On the offensive side, great hitting from Vos, Jessica Dirkse and others led to a 10 – 0 win in 5 innings.

The varsity team started the season playing the team they ended the season with last year.  IC snuck out a victory (1-0) in a regional game last May.  This year the lady Trojans weren’t going to let that happen again!

The varsity home game started a little shaky with the first two IC batters reaching base and advancing to second and third.  But the defense kicked in and did not allow a run.  In the home half of the first inning, the TC bats came out strong.  Three hard hit singles and a two-run double from Mackenzie Schaeffer led to a 4 – 0 lead after one inning.

Over the next four innings IC battled back, but Timothy still led 6 – 4.  After two quick outs in the 6th, IC’s bats woke up with a single, two run homer, single and a triple resulting in a 7 – 6 lead for IC.  To their credit, our Timothy girls didn’t panic and really turned up their focus.  The bottom of the sixth started with a double from Kari LeGrand, followed one batter later by a triple from Janna Strodtman.  Christina Lemon’s single drove in Strodtman with the go-ahead run.  Great defense by Lemon and Emma Heyboer shut down IC in the seventh to secure the win (8 – 7).

Girl's Soccer Open Season with a Win

3/22/10

The Lady Trojans played the season opener against the Ridgewood Rebels.  We were unsure what to expect from our new Metro Suburban Conference opponents, but we anticipated a competitive match against the 2009 class 2A Regional finalists.  The girls played tough right from the start with Kyla Smits scoring the first goal 7 minutes into the match.  After receiving a pass from Jasmine Stein, Smits finished on a nice one timer to the corner.  The Lady Trojans weren't satisfied and scored 10 minutes later to open the lead up.  Captain Niki Pizzello scored from 20 years out giving Michelle Ditchfield an assist.

Minutes later the Rebels came back to score off a cross to the back post making it a 2-1 game at halftime. The second half was a battle and although TC out-shot the Rebels, they found a way to tie the match off a corner kick sending the game into overtime.

Defensively the Lady Trojans did not give up a shot in OT and looked determined to finish with a win.  Led by the exceptional play of marking back Mary Meigs, the defensive unit was tough to beat.  With 3 minutes left in the first half of OT Pizzello scored the game winner off of Ditchfield's second assist for the night.

The Lady Trojan play their home opener @ 6:15p on Thursday 3/25 against Nazareth High School.
