Mrs. Sue Stein
Personal Profile
I was privileged to grow up in a Christian home. My parents sacrificed so that my brother and I could attend Highland [Indiana] Christian School and Illiana Christian High School. When my husband, Dwight, and I married, we were also committed to Christian education for our children. We moved to Lombard many years ago so that our children could attend a Christian school, and all three of our children are now Timothy alumni. When I am not at school, I enjoy reading, gardening, and getting together with friends. We are members of Bethel Protestant Reformed Church in Roselle.
Professional Profile
I have been a reader all my life! My mom used to tell me to stop reading, go outside, and play! At age 15 I got my first job—in my local public library. I graduated from Calvin College with a degree in education with an English major. I then went to Indiana University to earn my Master’s Degree in Library Science. I worked for 5 years as a children’s librarian in the Skokie Public Library, and then I took a 5-year break to start our family. When my oldest son started kindergarten, I also began my career here as the librarian for grades K-8. I have been here ever since! Discovering new books and new ways to connect students and books keeps me excited about each new school year.
Philosophical Profile
Christian education is based on the absolute truth of Scripture and acknowledges God as Creator and Lord of all. A Christian school and its teachers have the wonderful opportunity and obligation to communicate this truth. What does this mean for me as a librarian, a Christian, here at Timothy? As I teach children how to find and use information, they learn the key to discovering as much as they want to about God’s world. As I select books for the library and share good books with students, I am offering them another way to learn about God’s world. It’s cliché, but true…reading opens many doors. I have the responsibility to help students learn some discernment in this world of many “doors.” My goal is provide to our students a welcoming atmosphere and as many resources as possible so that they can grow to love learning and reading, which will enable them to become academically prepared Christian disciples.
